MVSD Board of Trustees Composition Survey

The Board of Trustees of Mountain View School Division is considering changes to the make-up of the Board.  The ward structure for elected officials must meet representation guidelines as outlined in the Public Schools Act, and the current structure is close to exceeding those guidelines.  Changing the structure to better meet these guidelines does not require a reduction in the Board size, but it was felt this option should be considered.  Currently the structure consists of nine trustees within four wards:

Ward 1 Roblin 2 trustees
Ward 2 Grandview, Gilbert Plains, Ethelbert, Mountain 2 trustees
Ward 3 RM of Dauphin, Ochre River, Winnipegosis, Mountain 2 trustees
Ward 4 City of Dauphin 3 trustees

The Board is considering a reduction to seven trustees within three wards:

Ward 1 Roblin, Grandview, Gilbert Plains 2 trustees
Ward 2 Ethelbert, Winnipegosis, Ochre River, Mountain, RM of Dauphin 2 trustees
Ward 3 City of Dauphin 3 trustees

The Board is seeking feedback from our communities prior to making a decision.  The Board has been functioning with seven trustees for over a year due to some resignations that occurred during the pandemic.   The approximate annual cost saving would be $10-$15,000, which is negligible on a $45 million budget.  More importantly, the Board wants to ensure communities will not feel a loss of local voice if a reduction in the number of trustees were to occur.
