Statement from MVSD Board Chair, Gabe Mercier

Mountain View School Division would like to inform its communities regarding recent events. On October 23, 2023, the MVSD Board of Trustees referred a discussion that had come forward surrounding parental rights to its Policy Committee. The Policy Committee is comprised of all MVSD Trustees. There is no resolution or confirmed proposal in front of the Board regarding parental rights at this time. Then, during the Nov. 13, 2023 meeting, an individual appeared as a delegation (as they may apply to do) and shared information regarding their beliefs and perspectives surrounding education issues, which may or may not be shared by others. During the upcoming Regular meeting on November 27, 2023, the Board will hear from two delegations, one of which will give another perspective on the parental rights issue. There will be no discussion or decision regarding parental rights vis a vis vaccinations, preferred pronouns, and/or LGBTQ+, etc., at the meeting. Trustees may ask clarifying questions of the delegation and that is it. The public gallery is simply for observation, and no gallery member has the ability to ask questions or publicly comment. As well, the Policy Committee has stated that they will not make any hasty decisions and will hear from the necessary experts before putting forward any recommendations. We hope this will help clarify any misunderstandings that individuals may have.
